Hepatitis B is a viral infection that primarily affects the liver, leading to chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, and, in severe cases, liver cancer. It is transmitted through contact with the blood or other body fluids of an infected person, and it can be prevented through vaccination and lifestyle interventions such as safe injection practices and blood screening. Nigeria, including Plateau State, continues to face a significant public health challenge from hepatitis B, with a high prevalence rate of the infection. In many regions, including Plateau, there is a general lack of awareness regarding the transmission, prevention, and treatment of hepatitis B.
Hepatitis B awareness campaigns and prevention strategies, including vaccination, have been rolled out in Nigeria, with the aim of reducing the prevalence of the disease. However, the success of these efforts in Plateau State is yet to be fully assessed. Community knowledge of the disease, attitudes toward vaccination, and engagement in preventive practices such as safe sex and avoidance of unsafe medical procedures are essential to the success of these initiatives. This study seeks to investigate the level of awareness regarding hepatitis B and evaluate the effectiveness of current prevention strategies in Plateau State.
Despite the availability of vaccines and preventive measures, hepatitis B remains a significant public health issue in Plateau State. There is limited information on the extent of public awareness about the virus, as well as gaps in the understanding of effective prevention strategies. Many individuals in rural and underserved areas of Plateau State may not fully comprehend the modes of transmission or the importance of vaccination. This lack of awareness and understanding has contributed to the continued spread of hepatitis B, making it a pressing health concern.
This study aims to address the gap in knowledge and evaluate the effectiveness of existing hepatitis B prevention strategies in Plateau State, ultimately providing recommendations for improving awareness and prevention efforts.
This study will assess hepatitis B awareness and prevention strategies within Plateau State, focusing on the general population and healthcare providers. Limitations may include challenges in reaching remote populations and biases in self-reported data regarding prevention behaviors.
